NHRC Fact-Finding — 2021

The National Human Rights Commission committee documented 1,979 complaints across 23 districts covering approx. 15,000 victims. Roughly 60% of FIRs filed by victims were refused by local police. The committee described the situation as a breakdown of constitutional governance.

West Bengal consistently records among the highest rates of political murder per NCRB data. After the 2021 assembly results, ground reports and CBI investigations documented dozens of killings — while the state's NCRB filing recorded just 7.

How Bengal's Cycle of Violence Works

2011 — TMC Takes Power

TMC ends 34 years of Left Front rule. Within nine months, 56 CPI(M) members are killed in attacks. Political patronage networks previously run by the Left are absorbed by TMC. The culture of booth capturing, land-grabbing, and syndicate control continues — now under new management.

2012 — Park Street Rape

Suzette Jordan gang-raped by five men in a moving car. CM Banerjee publicly calls it a "Shajano Ghotona" (fabricated case) before investigation concludes. The IPS officer who cracks the case is transferred out within weeks. One accused was the then-boyfriend of a future TMC MP.

2013 — Kamduni Horror

College student Shipra Ghosh gang-raped and mutilated by 8 TMC workers. CM calls protesters "CPM agents." A bomb is hurled at the home of the justice movement leader. The CID investigator handling the probe later becomes Kolkata Police Commissioner — overseeing the RG Kar cover-up in 2024.

2014–2016 — Narada Sting

Journalist Mathew Samuel of Narada News conducts undercover sting. 12 TMC leaders and one IPS officer caught on camera accepting cash bribes from a fictitious company. TMC wins 2016 elections with two-thirds majority despite videos being public. CBI probe ordered 2017. As of 2025, trials stalled with no convictions.

2016 — Saradha & Rose Valley Chit Fund Collapses

Millions of small depositors lose savings in Saradha and Rose Valley chit fund collapses. Both promoters had documented TMC links. Several TMC leaders including Madan Mitra arrested. Total fraud estimated at over ₹15,000 crore. Victims — mostly rural poor — never fully compensated.

2018 — Panchayat Violence

10 killed on polling day. TMC wins 34% of seats uncontested — candidates coerced into not filing nominations. Booth capturing documented. Opposition parties record hundreds of incidents of violence across Bengal's 77,000+ gram panchayat seats.

May 2021 — Post-Poll Massacre

TMC wins assembly landslide. Within hours, violence erupts across 23 districts. 14+ BJP workers killed in the first week. NHRC documents 1,979 complaints from 15,000 victims. 60% of FIRs refused by police. Calcutta HC orders CBI to take over 52 murder cases.

April 2022 — Hanskhali

14-year-old gang-raped and murdered at TMC panchayat member's son's party. Body cremated to destroy evidence. CM questions whether it was rape. All 9 accused convicted; 3 sentenced to life imprisonment — December 2025.

March 2022 — Bogtui Massacre

8 people burned alive inside locked homes in Birbhum. District TMC boss Anubrata Mondal refuses CBI summons citing "headache." Arrested August 2022 in cattle smuggling scam. Convicted by Delhi court 2024.

July 2022 — SSC/TET Education Scam

Education Minister Partha Chatterjee arrested. ₹49.8 crore cash recovered from associate's flat. Thousands of qualified teachers denied jobs. Calcutta HC declares all tainted appointments void.

October 2023 — Ration & Ministerial Arrests

Sitting Food Minister Jyotipriya Mallick arrested by ED. His testimony implicates Shahjahan Sheikh — triggering the chain of events that exposes years of rape and land-grabbing in Sandeshkhali.

January–February 2024 — Sandeshkhali

ED raids; Shahjahan flees for 55 days. Women finally speak. Arrested only after Calcutta HC condemned police inaction. CBI takes over; SC upholds probe.

August 2024 — RG Kar

Trainee doctor raped and murdered inside her hospital. College principal arrested for evidence tampering. FIR deliberately delayed. SC takes suo motu cognizance. Sanjoy Roy convicted — January 2025.

2025 — Courts Respond Systematically

SC cancels bail for post-poll accused; calls attacks "assault on roots of democracy." CBI names TMC MLA and two Kolkata Police officers as accused in Narkeldanga chargesheet. Hanskhali accused sentenced to life. Mondal cattle conviction upheld on appeal.
